Sun Apr 22 – Road Trip Day One
Picked up our rental car about 1.5 km away from the hotel, and drove to Lucca, which was the political and religious center of Italy (outside of Rome) before Florence rose. It’s a walled city, and we drove through the gates and parked almost immediately. No change for the parking meter so had to buy an expresso in order to get change and, ironically, a bathroom. We walked the narrow streets, seeing the usual stores, sidewalk cafes, dogs walking their owners, etc. Came to a wonderful piazza full of plant and flower vendors. Went to Sunday Mass in the main church, and then walked the city walls. Then drove to Pisa where we roamed around the baptismal building, the cathedral and the famous leaning bell tower of Pisa (circa 1172-1373). Grabbed a beer and pizza on the street looking up at the tower leaning toward us. Drove on to the coast, but didn’t see anything. Got lost trying to get back, as usual, but finally made it to the parking garage within a block of our hotel unexpectedly. Wine, cheese and olives for dinner. Quite a day.
