Sat Apr 21 – Academia, Duomo, Bargello Museum
Early start. Great breakfast in the hotel Pitti Palace al Ponte Vecchio, including the greatest bacon ever and honey comb. We walked to the Piazza San Marco, about 1.5 km away for a 9-12 tour of the Academia Museum, where we saw Michelangelo’s David, and the Duomo, the Cathedral of Florence. We went all the way up to the roof of the Duomo, which was an amazing trip – lurid heaven/hell mosaics make up the dome, and on the outside we had an incredible view over Florence. After that, we visited the Bargello Museum which is widely known for its Medici collection of artwork. The sculptures were amazing – Michelangelo and his kind. We saw the actual Mercury statue, religious carvings from the days of Jesus, medieval armor, and everything in between. Overwhelming. Dinner about 150 meters from our hotel, in an ally, at a wine and appetizers hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Nice.
